It’s hard to believe it’s that time again for another Screenly Changelog episode. Check out our monthly video update below on all things Screenly and digital signage.

In this episode, we cover:

  • The CrowdStike Catastrophe
  • Digital-Out-Of-Home Advertising in Switzerland
  • Screenly’s participation in the Secure by Design program

The CrowdStrike Catastrophe: A Perfect Storm

First, Viktor and Daniel discuss the recent CrowdStrike incident that affected devices around the world. The source of this debacle was a poorly executed software update, and there are many lessons that can be learned from this incident. Viktor and Daniel discuss the financial impact of this event and how companies can mitigate similar risks in the future, particularly regarding gatekeeping updates and gradual rollout practices.

Digital-Out-Of-Home Advertising in Switzerland

Digital-Out-Of-Home (DOOH) advertising is a massive industry worldwide. While it can provide customers with more information for purchasing decisions and can drive revenue for businesses, some people complain that DOOH advertising is an eyesore and a form of pollution to the cityscape.

Recently, courts in Switzerland paved the way for DOOH advertisements to be banned. In Vernier, most of the current 172 DOOH billboards will be removed after the recent decision, and groups are taking action to roll out similar bans in Bern and Zurich. In this Changelog episode, Viktor and Daniel discuss this recent happening and its implications for the digital signage industry.

Secure by Design

Screenly recently joined the United States Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency’s Secure by Design program. While this program is affiliated with CISA, it is also built in collaboration with cyber security agencies internationally. This program aims to encourage the integration of cybersecurity into the “design and manufacture of technology products”.

Key principles of this program include:

  • Taking ownership of customer security concerts
  • Following security-minded default practices
  • Adhering to secure product development practices
  • Carrying out pro-security business practices.

Screenly participates in the program to “put our money where our mouth is” as it relates to building secure digital signage. Viktor and Daniel discuss the implications of this program on Screenly’s trajectory as well as the importance of having security-first practices in the digital siganage industry.
